Hoop Bounce Paddle Rally
A cooperative partner rally where the ball has to bounce inside a hoop placed between the partners before every hit. Students practice accuracy and controlling force with a paddle, and work together to keep the longest rally possible.
How to play
- Form pairs; each pair puts a hoop on the ground and stands about 6 ft from it on opposite sides, each with a paddle and one tennis ball for the pair (2 min).
- The first player drops the ball and taps it gently from below so it bounces inside the hoop and reaches the partner, who sends it back the same way.
- The pair counts hits in a row that bounce inside the hoop; if the ball bounces outside, the count resets to zero (4 min).
- After 10 hits in a row, both take a step back; after three misses in a row, they step back in (4 min).
- Two-hoop phase: put two hoops side by side and alternate bouncing in each one, using forehand and backhand (4 min).
- Switch partners on the whistle and play a final 2-min round to set the class record; wrap up by talking about how they adjusted their force (4 min).
Rules
- Safety: pairs stay at least 10 ft from other pairs, and hits are always below the waist.
- The ball may bounce only once, and it must be inside the hoop.
- If the ball rolls into another pair's space, wait until they stop to get it.
Variations
Easier
Use a big hoop or two hoops together and allow a second bounce outside the hoop.
Standard
One bounce inside a hoop, 6 ft apart, and a step back every 10 hits.
Harder
Replace the hoop with a flat disc cone and allow backhand hits only.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated with the hoop closer while the partner aims hits to their position.
- Visual impairment: use a bright or beeping ball and a hoop with a high-contrast rim.
- Skill level: students who struggle can use a foam ball, which bounces lower and slower.
Learning goals
- Adjust hitting force so the ball bounces in a specific spot.
- Hit forehand and backhand with a paddle after a bounce.
- Work with a partner to improve a shared record.
Equipment for a class of 25
- paddles: 25
- tennis balls: 15
- hoops: 26
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is hitting too hard: tell students to let the paddle carry the ball forward and up, like a push. Line pairs up in rows so loose balls do not roll through other spaces.
