Hitter Coverage: Don't Let the Block Win
Groups of four learn to surround the teammate who's attacking so they can dig the ball if it comes back off the block. The idea: when one player attacks, the whole team stays in the play.
How to play
- Explain with cones: when a teammate attacks, the others form a low semicircle around them, 1-2 m away, in a defensive stance (4 min).
- No ball: the hitter mimes the attack and the other three run to their coverage spots on the clap (4 min).
- With a ball: the hitter attacks softly over the net; from the far side, the teacher or a classmate immediately throws a short ball back at the hitter's feet, like a block. The coverage players dig it up (8 min).
- Points game in groups of four: 1 point per covered ball and 2 if, after digging it, the team gets the ball back over the net. Rotate roles every five tries (10 min).
- Debrief: who covers which gap? Each group lays out its coverage on the floor with cones (4 min).
Rules
- The "block" throw is two-handed and aimed down, never at the face.
- Coverage players stay low and don't dive on the floor.
- Call "mine!" before playing the covered ball.
- Nobody goes under the net during the drill.
Variations
Easier
The hitter throws instead of hitting, and the "block" sends the ball back slowly.
Standard
Soft attack and simulated block with a short throw.
Harder
A real block by a classmate with hands above the net, no jump, and a jumping attack.
Adaptations
- Knee injury: acts as the thrower-blocker on the far side, no squatting.
- Fear of the ball: covers the spot farthest from the hitter, with a soft ball.
- Wheelchair users: cover the back area, and their digs count the same.
Learning goals
- Understand attack coverage as part of team play.
- Fill useful spaces around the hitter.
- React quickly to a ball that comes back short.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 8
- volleyball net: 1
- elastic cords: 2
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Be the blocker yourself at first so you control how hard the ball comes back. The typical mistake is standing tall to watch the attack: cue "when they hit, I get low and close."
