Hip Hinge: From Dowel Drill to Safe Box Lifting

A partner progression for lifting loads off the floor with a neutral spine: hip hinge with a dowel on the back, deadlift with a light box, and carrying and turning without twisting. Students apply safe posture habits to daily life and work.

How to play

  1. Explanation (3 min): demo a bad lift (rounded back, straight legs) and a good one (hips back, neutral spine, load close to the body).
  2. Dowel (5 min): in pairs, the dowel touches the head, upper back, and tailbone; 3 sets of 8 hinges without the dowel leaving any point while the partner watches.
  3. Light box (5 min): a cardboard box with 3–4 books between the feet; hinge into a squat, grip underneath, stand up by pushing the floor away; 3 sets of 6.
  4. Carry (4 min): carry the box 8 yards held to the chest, turn by moving the feet, never the torso, and set it on a table or the floor with the same technique.
  5. Final challenge (3 min): each pair moves boxes from one corner to another while the other pair scores three key points.

Rules

Variations

Easier

Do only the dowel hinge and lifting an empty box.

Standard

Full progression of dowel, box with books, and carry with a foot turn.

Harder

Lift the box from an awkward spot, such as under a table, while keeping a neutral spine.

Adaptations

Learning goals

Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip

Connect the technique to real life: moving day, summer jobs, or a heavy backpack. The typical mistake is looking down and rounding the back at the end.
