High Net, Low Net: Why Do Rules Change by Category?
Stations where the same task is tried in the women's version and the men's version: volleyball net, hurdle height and implement weight. Students practice and debate when a rule difference reflects the body and when it reflects tradition.
How to play
- Share real facts: volleyball nets are 2.24 m for women and 2.43 m for men; sprint hurdles are 0.838 m (100 m) versus 1.067 m (110 m); shot put is 4 kg versus 7.26 kg (4 min).
- Station 1: serves and spikes at both net heights (8 min).
- Station 2: running over low hurdles at two school heights and spacings (8 min).
- Station 3: medicine ball throws at two school weights, chest pass and overhead (8 min).
- Final debate with three questions: who picks the net or weight in PE? Should it be by gender, age or skill level? Are there sports where men and women compete together? (7 min).
Rules
- Everyone freely chooses which version to try at each station.
- In throws, no one enters the landing area until everyone has thrown.
- Set hurdles so they tip forward.
- In the debate, talk about rules and data, not individual bodies.
Variations
Easier
Only two stations and a guided debate with options.
Standard
Three stations with both versions.
Harder
Groups find a real mixed sport and explain its rules (for example, equestrian or mixed doubles badminton).
Adaptations
- Students who use wheelchairs: at the hurdle station, slalom between cones at two widths; throw seated.
- Wrist injury: hurdle station and debate only.
- Hesitant students: may stick with the lower version without explaining why.
Learning goals
- Adjust technique to different playing conditions.
- Think critically about sex-specific rules.
- Argue with data and respect.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyball nets: 2
- volleyballs: 6
- low hurdles: 10
- medicine balls: 6
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
School medicine balls shouldn't go above 3–4 kg (about 7–9 lb); official weights are only quoted. Common mistake: the debate boils down to "boys are stronger"; ask about age, skill level and training.
