Healthy Walk with Stops: Lead a Walk for Older Adults
In groups, students design and lead a walking route with light activity stops, planned for a walk with older adults from the neighborhood. It covers safe route planning and healthy physical activity.
How to play
- Groups of 5 plot a 15–20 minute route with three stops on a map of the school grounds or a nearby park (5 min).
- Assign roles: leader (sets a talking pace), sweeper (always at the back), safety (steps, curbs, shade), stop coach (two minutes of supported balance, mobility, or a memory game), and timekeeper (8 min).
- Each group leads its route for another group, who walk at a pace where they can talk without panting (20 min).
- Map review: hazards, benches, shade, water fountains, and restrooms spotted along the way (7 min).
- Each group shares one tip for the real walk (5 min).
Rules
- Talking pace: if anyone is panting, slow down.
- The sweeper is always last, and nobody drops behind them.
- Off campus only with permission, another adult, and using crosswalks.
- Stops are in the shade with something to hold on to.
Variations
Easier
Route inside school grounds with only one stop.
Standard
Route with three stops and all roles.
Harder
Route with two distance options and a backup plan for rain or heat.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: serves as safety lead, checking that the route works for wheelchairs, and walks it with the group.
- Visual impairment: walks with a guide and shares which obstacles and warnings matter.
- Leg injury: serves as timekeeper and coach at the stops.
Learning goals
- Plan a safe, accessible route.
- Pace effort for older adults.
- Organize roles for an outdoor event.
Equipment for a class of 25
- safety vests: 6
- first aid kit: 1
- maps: 6
- cones: 12
- stopwatches: 6
Teacher tip
Leaving campus requires parent permission and another adult; otherwise keep it on school grounds. Bring water and a first aid kit. Common mistake: the leader walks too fast; remind them they're guiding, not racing.
