Handstand with Two Spotters: Kick Up, Thigh Catch, Side Exit
Freestanding handstand work in threes: one kicks up and two partners catch at the thighs and help line them up. Students learn the inverted balance and how to spot it safely at the same time.
How to play
- Spotting demo: one spotter on each side in a lunge, one hand on the thigh and one on the shin; never grab the ankle (5 min).
- Slow-motion kick-up: the performer goes up with legs apart and the spotters guide and bring the legs together at the top (7 min).
- 5–10 second holds: spotters gradually ease off and the performer corrects with fingers and shoulders (8 min).
- Safe exits: practice the side exit by turning one hand and stepping down the way you came up, first spotted and then alone (6 min).
- Final rotation and role card review: what each spotter did well (4 min).
Rules
- Spotters set up before the kick-up, and the performer doesn't go until they hear 'ready.'
- Spot at the thighs and shins, never the feet.
- Everyone can bail by turning one hand before they go up.
- One person upside down per mat.
Variations
Easier
Handstand with one leg resting on a spotter and the other bent.
Standard
Handstand with two spotters and a 5–10 second hold.
Harder
One spotter only and a two-hand walk in the handstand.
Adaptations
- High blood pressure, eye conditions or dizziness: feet on the bench with hips high, without dropping the head all the way.
- Limited leg mobility: coach the spotters with the card and work hand support in a plank.
- Nervous students: start with a chest-to-wall handstand and join the trio when ready.
Learning goals
- Hold an inverted balance with support.
- Learn the thigh-catch spotting technique.
- Know and practice safe ways out of a handstand.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 10
- role cards: 10
Teacher tip
Group trios of similar height so spotters can reach the thighs. The classic mistake is a spotter standing too far away: they should reach the partner's hip with a bent elbow.
