Handball Warm-Up: Passing Rondo with the Weak Hand
5v2 rondos in small squares that gradually raise intensity and force the use of the weak hand. They get shoulders, wrists and legs ready for a handball session while practicing passing and catching.
How to play
- Shoulder and wrist mobility with the ball: circles, hand-to-hand passes and alternating dribbles (2 min).
- 8 x 8 m (25 x 25 ft) squares with seven students: 5v2 rondo with free passing (3 min).
- Passes with the weak hand only; the defender who intercepts swaps with the player who made the mistake (3 min).
- Rondo with a mandatory jump pass every three passes to activate the legs (2 min).
Rules
- Medium-power passes to a teammate's chest, never to the face.
- Defenders intercept without colliding or diving to the floor.
- Defenders change at least every minute so nobody gets stuck.
Variations
Easier
5v1 rondo, passing with either hand.
Standard
5v2 rondo with the weak hand.
Harder
4v2 rondo in a 6 x 6 m (20 x 20 ft) square with only one dribble allowed.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: holds a fixed corner of the square and receives bounce passes.
- Visual impairment: small-group rondo with a ball with a bell and rolled passes.
- Wrist injury: plays defender without the ball, working on footwork.
Learning goals
- Activate the joints involved in throwing.
- Improve passing and catching with the weak hand.
- Raise heart rate gradually before the main part of the lesson.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handballs: 4
- cones: 16
- pinnies: 8
Teacher tip
Time the defender swaps so nobody stays in the middle too long. It works well as the first task in any handball lesson.
