Handball: Pass, Fake and Shoot Triangle
A handball-specific warm-up in groups of three that links passing on the move, a fake against a cone-defender and a soft shot on goal. It prepares the shoulders, ankles and knees for the sport's movements and gets decision-making going from the first minute.
How to play
- Shoulder mobility with the ball: circles, rotations and half-speed passes against the wall (2 min).
- Form trios in three lines facing each goal; mark the triangle with three cones 6 m from the goal area (1 min).
- Block one: pass on the run among the three, no dribbling and catching on the move, up to the last cone and back (2 min).
- Block two: the last receiver makes a change-of-direction fake at the cone-defender and shoots at 50% (3 min).
- Block three: a teammate plays passive defender with arms up and the shooter decides whether to fake right or left based on the gap (2 min).
Rules
- Shots are at half power and always to the lower corners while there is no equipped goalkeeper.
- Nobody collects balls inside the goal area while another trio is shooting.
- The defender in block three is passive: no touching or blocking the shooter's arm.
- The three-step rule applies from the first pass.
Variations
Easier
Drop the fake and shoot after a standing catch.
Standard
Passing triangle, fake at a cone and half-power shot.
Harder
The defender becomes semi-active and the shooter has only two seconds to decide.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: acts as the fixed passer at the triangle's corner and shoots from a standstill at a smaller goal.
- Hearing impairment: block changes are signaled by raising colored cones.
- Shoulder injury: does the footwork and the fake, and replaces the shot with a low pass.
Learning goals
- Specifically activate the shoulder and lower-body muscles for handball.
- Link passing, faking and shooting smoothly.
- Choose the side of the fake based on the defender's position.
Equipment for a class of 25
- handballs: 10
- cones: 12
- goals: 2
Teacher tip
Remember that a hard shot with a cold arm is the riskiest move for the shoulder: insist on 50% effort throughout the warm-up.
