Hand Pelota 2v2: Front Player, Back Player and Court Judge
Doubles hand-pelota games against the wall with the traditional front-player and back-player roles and a judge who calls the points. It helps students understand how to split the court and to referee with good judgment.
How to play
- Roles: the front player stays near the wall and cuts the ball off; the back player covers the back court and serves. The judge calls a fault if the ball hits below the tape line or lands out (4 min).
- Pair rally: front and back players split the ball with one rule: whoever has it in front plays it, the other moves away (6 min).
- 2v2 games to 10 points with a judge and a scorekeeper on each court; the judge explains every call out loud (14 min).
- Rotation: the winning pair stays and the judges come in to play; repeat with a new judge (8 min).
- Debrief: each judge shares the hardest call of the day and the group decides how to rule on it (3 min).
Rules
- The ball must hit the wall above the fault line and land inside the court.
- Know where your partner is before you hit; if in doubt, call 'mine' or 'yours'.
- The judge decides and nobody argues on court; questions go to the debrief.
- Nobody goes for a ball if another player is hitting within arm's reach.
Variations
Easier
Allow two bounces and play to 7 points.
Standard
One bounce max, games to 10 points.
Harder
The back player must serve with the non-dominant hand and the front player must volley at least once per point.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student acts as head judge with a helper confirming bounces, or plays front player on a smaller court.
- Hearing impairment: the judge uses agreed signals (arm up for fault, arm forward for good point).
- Sore hand: play with a foam ball or a thin gardening glove.
Learning goals
- Split the court using front and back roles.
- Referee with judgment and explain the calls.
- Keep communicating with a partner during the point.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 8
- masking tape: 2
- score sheets: 6
Teacher tip
If your wall has no fault line, put a strip of masking tape one meter off the ground. The typical mistake is both partners chasing the same ball; repeat the rule 'whoever has it in front'.
