Hand Fronton: Serving Between the Lines and Games to 15
A school version of Basque hand pelota on a fronton court or schoolyard wall, with a soft ball, a low line on the wall and two lines on the ground for serving. It's played singles or doubles and introduces where this traditional game comes from.
How to play
- Cultural context: hand pelota is a traditional game from the Basque Country and Navarre, played on fronton walls all over Spain; explain the wall, the low line and the service lines (3 min).
- Serving between the lines: the serve is hit after a bounce and must hit the wall and land between the two lines on the ground; practice in pairs (6 min).
- 1-on-1 rally: alternate hits on one bounce, always above the low line on the wall (7 min).
- Games to 15: singles or doubles, alternating hits between teams; whoever wins the point serves (11 min).
- Hand care: palm massage plus finger and wrist stretches while talking through the games (3 min).
Rules
- Soft balls only; never a real fronton ball.
- A ball that hits below the low line or outside the marked sides is a point for the opponents.
- If you're not hitting, get out of the ball's path; if there's any risk of collision, stop and replay the point.
Variations
Easier
Two bounces allowed, and you may hit with both hands together.
Standard
One bounce, serving between the lines, games to 15.
Harder
Volley or one bounce only, and the serve must land past the long line.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: the ball may bounce twice and play happens in a narrow zone in front of the wall.
- Low vision: a large ball in a contrasting color; the opponent calls "go" when hitting.
- Sore hands: wear a thin gardening glove or play with a wooden paddle.
Learning goals
- Learn a traditional pelota game and its cultural context.
- Strike with the hand, controlling direction and height.
- Apply the basic serving and scoring rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soft rubber balls: 15
- masking tape: 2
- chalk: 4
- cones: 16
Teacher tip
No fronton court? Any smooth, windowless wall will do; tape the low line one meter up. Ask if anyone plays back home: there's often a student who can explain the real rules.
