Habit Chain: Circle Memory with Gestures
In circles, each student says a healthy habit that helps them move and adds a gesture; the next person repeats the whole chain and adds theirs. A cooperative memory challenge to slow things down.
How to play
- Circles of 8 to 10 shuffle slowly sideways until the teacher calls «stop» (1 min).
- Chain round: the first student says a habit («I drink water at recess») with a gesture; the second repeats the first and adds their own, all the way around. If someone gets stuck, the group helps with the gesture (3 min).
- Gestures-only round: repeat the chain without words while the circle softly guesses each habit (2 min).
- Each circle picks its star habit and presents it with the gesture to the rest of the class (1 min).
Rules
- No repeated habits within a circle.
- Nobody is out: the group helps.
- Talk about habits, never about bodies or weight.
- Gestures are gentle, no jumping.
Variations
Easier
Circles of 5, repeating only the last three habits.
Standard
Circles of 8 to 10 with the full chain.
Harder
Do the chain walking in a circle and switch direction after each lap.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: classmates briefly describe their gesture as they do it.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: each habit comes with a very clear gesture and, if the student uses it, a sign.
- Students with memory difficulties: say their habit first or second and lean on the gestures.
Learning goals
- Cool down with an attention task.
- Share healthy habits linked to movement.
- Cooperate to complete a shared challenge.
Teacher tip
If the chain fills up with food habits only, ask for one sleep habit, one screen habit, and one hygiene habit. It is a nice way to close a health unit.
