Habit Bingo: A Walking Cool-Down
A cool-down where the group walks around the schoolyard looking for classmates who match the squares on a study-and-movement habit bingo card. It brings heart rates down and starts real conversations about routines without putting anyone on the spot.
How to play
- Hand-out and rules: everyone gets a 3 × 3 card with squares like "walked or biked to school", "knows a neck stretch", "gets up at least once an hour while studying" or "carries a water bottle" (1 min).
- Walk and ask: walk, don't run, and ask one classmate per square; to sign, they show or explain something in 20 s (for example, demonstrate the stretch). One signature per person (3 min).
- Second half, slower: stroll pace, and you can only ask classmates on the opposite side of the schoolyard, so the group mixes and heart rates keep dropping (2 min).
- Count-up: anyone with a line calls it out, and the group talks about which squares were hardest to fill and why (2 min).
Rules
- Walk at all times; running voids your card.
- Each classmate can sign only one square on your card.
- Squares are about habits, never about bodies, weight or specific foods.
- Anyone can answer "pass" to any question.
Variations
Easier
2 × 3 card and a simple yes or no is enough.
Standard
3 × 3 card with a 20-second demo or explanation.
Harder
On top of the signature, each student writes down one useful tip from a classmate to try that week.
Adaptations
- Student with a visual impairment: uses a large-print card or has a partner read it, walking together.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing student: questions are asked by pointing at the square, and a demo counts as the answer.
- Student with social anxiety: plays with a trusted partner and they share a card.
Learning goals
- Recover after exercise by walking.
- Recognize the healthy habits already present in the group.
- Talk with classmates they don't usually talk to.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bingo cards: 30
- pencils: 30
Teacher tip
Print two different card versions back to back so not everyone is hunting for the same thing. The usual problem is friends clustering together, so require every signature to come from someone they haven't talked to today.
