H-O-R-S-E in Small Groups
Turn-based shooting game in groups of 4: the leader calls a shot and, if it goes in, everyone else must copy it; anyone who misses gets a letter of H-O-R-S-E. Students try different shot types, get creative and practice taking turns.
How to play
- Make groups of 4 per basket with one ball and spread 5 poly spots 5 to 13 ft from the rim.
- The leader calls the shot before taking it, for example: 'blue spot, off the backboard, left hand.'
- If it goes in, the other three copy it in turn and anyone who misses gets a letter (H, O, R, S, E).
- If the leader misses, nobody copies and the next player leads; the leader changes every turn.
- When someone spells HORSE the game ends and a new one starts right away, with no one sitting out (about 4 minutes per game).
- After 2 games, rotate groups to a new basket and play 2 more.
Rules
- If the shot is not called first, no one has to copy it.
- No backward shots or risky jumps.
- Only the shooter chases the rebound; everyone else waits behind the spot.
Variations
Easier
Play P-I-G (3 letters) and copy shots one step closer.
Standard
Five letters, shots from the spots, shot must be called.
Harder
The leader must add a dribble or a ball fake before the shot.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the group picks accessible spots and may use a lowered hoop.
- Hearing impairment: the leader points to the spot and shows the shot with a gesture.
- Lower skill: the student gets one extra 'life' before each letter.
Learning goals
- Explore shots from different distances, hands and angles.
- Create and describe a shot so others can repeat it.
- Take turns and accept the result with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- youth basketballs: 6
- basketball hoops: 6
- poly spots: 30
Teacher tip
First teach bank shots: aim for the top corner of the square on angle shots. Watch that leaders do not call the same easy shot every time.
