Gym Escape Room: The Locked Lab
Each team has to open a box sealed with a four-digit combination lock where a scientist hid her secret formula. Teams earn the digits by beating five stations that pair a physical challenge with a riddle, so students practice teamwork, aim, balance and problem solving.
How to play
- Make 5 teams of 5 and tell the story: the formula is in the box, and only the code opens it. Each team starts at one of the 5 stations (3 min).
- Target: toss beanbags into 3 hoops 13 feet away until the team makes 10 shots. Prize: a riddle whose answer is the first digit.
- River: cross 25 feet stepping only inside 3 hoops passed forward; if anyone steps out, start over. Prize: the second digit.
- Memory: around a corner 50 feet away is a line of colored cones; students run one at a time to look and rebuild it. Math: find the three cards under 6 cones that add up to 15. Each gives a digit; the fifth station gives the order of all four.
- Rotate clockwise on the whistle every 4 minutes (20 min). Then each team tries its code and, if it fails, may recheck one station (4 min).
- Wrap up in a circle: which station was hardest and how each team got organized (3 min).
Rules
- Everyone takes part in a station before the team asks for its card.
- No peeking at other teams' cards or touching their equipment.
- Run only in the marked lanes, and never run backward.
Variations
Easier
Three-digit locks, picture riddles and unlimited tries at each station.
Standard
Five 4-minute stations, each with a physical challenge and a riddle, and a four-digit code.
Harder
Clues come in code, and each step out in the river adds 30 seconds to the final time.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student crosses the river along a lane of cones and is the team's card keeper and reader.
- Autism or shyness: give a picture map of the stations and a fixed role, such as clue reader.
- Fitness level: adjust throwing and memory-run distances for each team.
Learning goals
- Cooperate toward a shared goal by splitting up tasks within the team.
- Use aim, balance and memory to solve movement challenges.
- Solve simple logic and math riddles under time pressure.

Teacher tip
Put the cards in numbered envelopes before class. If a team gets stuck, trade an extra clue for 10 jumping jacks from the whole group.
