Group Tree Pose Forest
The class does yoga tree pose in a circle with hands on each other's shoulders, then gradually removes support until everyone is balancing on their own. It combines static balance, breathing and group connection, showing how the group holds each person up.
How to play
- Form a standing circle shoulder to shoulder, with the whole class or in two circles of 12 or 13; everyone barefoot or in flat shoes.
- Teach tree pose: one foot planted, the sole of the other foot resting on the ankle or the inside of the calf, never on the knee.
- Phase 1 (90 seconds): everyone drapes their arms over neighbors' shoulders, does tree pose on the right leg and takes 5 slow breaths, then switches legs.
- Phase 2 (90 seconds): let go and touch only palm to palm with the neighbors on each side; repeat on each leg.
- Phase 3 (2 minutes): no contact, arms up like branches and eyes on a fixed point; anyone who loses balance puts the foot down and starts again without leaving the circle.
- Close with 1 minute standing, eyes closed and hands joined, noticing the breath slow down.
Rules
- Never rest your foot on the knee, to protect the joint.
- If you lose balance, put your foot down and restart without grabbing anyone suddenly.
- Stay quiet to help everyone focus.
- No pushing or swaying classmates as a joke.
Variations
Easier
Keep the toes of the lifted foot on the floor next to the ankle in every phase.
Standard
Three phases: arms on shoulders, palms touching and unsupported tree.
Harder
Do phase 3 with eyes closed or while slowly swaying the arms like branches in the wind.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can do a seated tree, raising their arms and joining hands with neighbors.
- Students who are blind or have low vision keep one hand in contact with a classmate at all times.
- Students with weaker balance may keep one hand on the wall or on a classmate during the final phase.
Learning goals
- Improve static balance and postural control.
- Experience how group support makes individual challenges easier.
- Use slow breathing to focus and relax.
Teacher tip
Stand inside the circle so you can correct foot placement. At the end, share the forest idea: we stand stronger together, a nice message to close a cooperative lesson.
