Green and Red Zones: Where You Can Grip in Wrestling
A moving warm-up to agree on which body parts can be touched and gripped in wrestling games. Students warm up while learning to ask for permission and respect limits.

How to play
- Free jog around the space; when you pass someone, give a soft high five and make eye contact (2 min).
- The teacher calls a green zone (shoulders, arms, upper back) and pairs who meet touch it with an open hand, then keep jogging (3 min).
- On "red," everyone stops one meter from their partner and names a no-go zone together: head, neck, face, twisted joints or private areas (2 min).
- In pairs: ask "Is it OK if I grip your forearm?", grip only after a yes, and rock back and forth with a gentle push (2 min).
- In a circle, the class picks one shared stop signal for every wrestling game in the unit (1 min).
Rules
- Touch with an open hand only, never a slap.
- If someone says "no" or "stop," let go right away, no arguing.
- No one comments on anyone's body.
- Anyone who doesn't want contact can greet from a distance and still takes part.
Variations
Easier
High fives and greetings only, no grips.
Standard
Green-zone touches plus a forearm grip with permission.
Harder
Pairs move while gripping forearms and the teacher changes zones every 20 seconds.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: show a green card for green zones and a red card for "red."
- Wheelchair users: move at their own pace; the partner comes down to their level for the grip.
- Students uncomfortable with contact: they can do the whole warm-up greeting from a distance.
Learning goals
- Warm up gradually.
- Identify allowed and off-limits zones in wrestling.
- Practice asking for and giving permission before contact.
Teacher tip
Post the green and red zones on the wall for the whole unit. The usual mistake is asking as a joke: insist the question is asked face to face and the answer is actually waited for.
