Grabby Feet: Move the Scarf With Your Toes
Barefoot or in socks, students pick up a scarf with their toes and carry it to a hoop without using their hands. It works foot muscles, balance and focus.
How to play
- In pairs, sitting on the floor or a bench, shoes off. Each pair has two scarves and a hoop one meter away (1 min).
- Seated: grab the scarf with your toes, lift it and drop it in the hoop; five times with each foot (2 min).
- Standing on one leg, hand on your partner's shoulder: grab the scarf and drop it in the hoop (2 min).
- Pair challenge: sitting face to face, pass the scarf foot to foot without it touching the floor (2 min).
- Put shoes back on and each pair returns scarves and hoop to the cart (1 min).
Rules
- Only on a clean, smooth floor; on rough outdoor surfaces, keep socks on.
- When standing, always have support: your partner or the wall.
- Hands don't touch the scarf until the final cleanup.
Variations
Easier
Scarf balled up so it's easier to grip.
Standard
Scarf laid flat, seated and standing.
Harder
Use a small beanbag or a clothespin instead of the scarf.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired students: replace the hoop with a box that makes a sound when the scarf lands.
- Wheelchair users or students without foot mobility: do the challenge with the non-dominant hand and a clothespin.
- Students who don't want to go barefoot: keep socks on or use a bigger scarf.
Learning goals
- Strengthen foot muscles.
- Improve static balance.
- Focus on a slow, fine movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 30
- hoops: 15
Teacher tip
Check the floor before shoes come off and let each student choose socks or bare feet. Explain that strong feet help prevent ankle sprains; it gives the challenge a purpose.
