Goaltimate with a Pole Arch
An alternative version of Ultimate where teams score by throwing the disc through a central arch built with poles and catching it on the other side. With a single arch in the middle of a half circle, play flips constantly between offense and defense and rewards accurate passing.
How to play
- Build an arch about 6 ft wide with two upright poles in cones and a crossbar pole (or rope) at about 6 ft high. Mark a 40 ft radius half circle of cones in front of the arch (3 min).
- Teams of 4 in pinnies; two play while others wait. The disc is put into play from outside the half circle.
- To score, a player throws the disc through the arch from inside the half circle and a teammate catches it on the other side: 1 point. If the disc drops or is intercepted, possession changes.
- After a turnover, the new offense must take the disc outside the half circle before it can score ("clearing the disc"). 4-minute games with teams rotating (12 min).
- Wrap-up: students vote for the team with the best Spirit of the Game and discuss which positions around the arch worked best (5 min).
Rules
- Basic Ultimate rules: no running with the disc, 10 seconds to throw and no contact.
- Nobody may stand still under the arch or hang on the poles.
- Players call their own fouls and replay the point.
Variations
Easier
Widen the arch to 10 ft and allow a score without a receiver if the disc passes cleanly.
Standard
Score with a throw through the arch and a catch on the other side.
Harder
The scoring throw must alternate between forehand and backhand each point.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as a fixed receiver behind the arch or as an unguarded thrower.
- Autistic students: explain the clearing rule with a visual diagram before play.
- Advanced players: may only score as the receiver, never as the thrower.
Learning goals
- Throw accurately at a small target under pressure.
- Adapt to constant switches between offense and defense.
- Self-officiate using the Spirit of the Game.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Secure the poles in cones with holes and make sure the crossbar falls off easily if hit. Demonstrate the clearing rule, since it is the hardest one to grasp.
