Goalie Wars Partner Battle
Two pairs face off on a small field: each pair defends a wide goal with their hands and attacks the opposite goal by kicking from their own zone. Students practice accurate striking, making saves, and reacting fast after receiving.
How to play
- Set up 6 fields of 12 x 8 yards with cones: each end line is a 6-yard goal, and a line 3 yards in marks each pair's zone.
- Each pair defends its goal and may make saves with their hands inside their zone; no one crosses into the other half.
- After a save, the player drops the ball or passes it to their partner, and one of them must shoot with the foot from their zone within 5 seconds.
- Each goal is worth one point; if the ball goes out over a sideline, the other pair restarts from their zone.
- Play 3-minute games, then rotate: winners play winners and losers play losers. With an odd number, one group of three rotates a player.
- Play 4 rounds with 1 minute to switch; in the last one, players may shoot only with their weaker foot.
Rules
- Shots stay low or at waist height: a ball arriving above the shoulders does not count.
- No diving; saves are made standing or kneeling.
- Respect the 5-second shooting rule.
- No one crosses into the other half, not even to chase a live ball.
Variations
Easier
Move the zones farther apart and shrink the goal to 4 yards to make saves easier.
Standard
Use 12 x 8 yard fields with 6-yard goals.
Harder
Players may only shoot on the volley out of their hands, within 3 seconds.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student defends a narrower goal and shoots by pushing the ball; opponents shoot from farther back.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with bells and have the partner call "Ball!" before each opposing shot.
- Skill level: pair a more experienced player with a less experienced one to balance games.
Learning goals
- Kick toward the open spaces in the goal.
- React and get in position to make saves with the hands.
- Work with a partner to cover the whole goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 7
- cones: 36
Teacher tip
Use foam balls: at such short range, a hard ball hurts. Teach players to get their body behind the ball rather than reaching with straight arms.
