Giant Pick-Up Sticks
A giant version of pick-up sticks: a bundle of poles is dropped and players take turns removing one without moving any other. It develops fine motor control, patience, careful observation and taking turns.
How to play
- Make 5 groups of 5 sitting in circles about 6 ft apart, and give each group 8 poles (2 min).
- One player holds the poles upright on the floor in the middle and lets go; everyone leans back while they fall.
- Going clockwise, each player removes one pole touching only that pole; if nothing else moves, they keep it and go again, up to 3 in a row.
- If another pole moves, the others, acting as judges, call out 'It moved!' and the turn passes on.
- When the pile is gone, count points by color (red 3, blue 2, yellow 1). Play 3 games of about 4 min, with a new starter each time.
- Cooperative final round (1 min): the group counts how many poles they can remove together without a single wiggle.
Rules
- Only touch the pole you are removing; your first pole can be used as a lever.
- Poles are released from the floor, never thrown or lifted above the head.
- Lay your poles flat on the floor behind you so nobody trips.
Variations
Easier
Play with 6 poles and allow a small wiggle as long as nothing rolls.
Standard
8 poles per group; any movement ends the turn.
Harder
10 poles using only the non-dominant hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: play seated at a table with long craft sticks or half-length dowels.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast poles and have a partner describe how they cross.
- Skill level: students who get frustrated may use a lever pole from their first turn.
Learning goals
- Control finger and wrist force and precision.
- Study the pile and choose the easiest pole to free.
- Wait their turn and accept the group's call.
Equipment for a class of 25
- poles: 40
Teacher tip
Remind judges to watch the ends of the poles, where movement shows. When in doubt, the player simply tries again, which heads off arguments.
