Giant Floor Tangram Teams
In teams, students rebuild tangram figures on the floor using seven giant cardstock pieces that they fetch one at a time by walking from a supply area. It works spatial perception, shape rotation, decision-making and teamwork.
How to play
- Before class, cut 5 giant tangram sets from cardstock (a 3-ft square divided into the 7 pieces) and place them in a supply area at one end of the room, marked with cones.
- Make 5 teams of 5, each in a building zone 20 ft from the supply area. Show the 7 pieces and the golden rule: pieces never overlap (2 min).
- Each team gets a card with the outline of a figure (house, cat, boat). Taking turns, one player walks to the supply area, brings back one piece and returns.
- The team places the piece together and decides what is missing; the next player leaves once the last piece is on the floor.
- When a figure is finished, the teacher checks it, the team walks the pieces back and gets a harder card. Keep building figures for 14 min.
- Wrap-up (4 min): each team invents a figure, names it and another team tries to copy it.
Rules
- Always walk, never run, to the supply area.
- Each trip brings one piece, chosen by the player who goes.
- All 7 pieces are used in every figure, with no overlaps.
- Safety: pieces stay flat on the floor and nobody steps on them, because cardstock slips.
Variations
Easier
The card shows the outline with each piece's lines drawn in.
Standard
The card shows only the outline of the figure.
Harder
The team builds in silence, communicating only with gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student is the architect who places and rotates pieces in the building zone while others fetch them.
- Visual impairment: use pieces with raised edges and a small model figure to touch.
- Shy students: the team assigns set roles (carrier, builder, checker) so everyone joins in without pressure.
Learning goals
- Mentally rotate and combine shapes to match a figure.
- Decide as a team which piece to bring on each trip.
- Work together while respecting turns and everyone's ideas.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock: 15
- cards: 20
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Laminate the pieces or use thick cardboard so they last for years. If a team gets stuck, hint where the large triangle goes.
