Ghost Rope: Jump Rope Footwork Without the Rope
A circle warm-up that rehearses jump rope steps without a rope, to the beat of hand claps. It wakes up ankles and calves and teaches the steps before the rope comes out.

How to play
- In a circle, turn your wrists as if holding a rope and do two-foot bounces to the teacher's claps (2 min).
- Eight counts of each step: alternate foot, boxer step, side-to-side ski and forward-back bell (3 min).
- One student leads a step from the middle and everyone copies; switch leaders every eight counts (2 min).
- Finish with sixteen light bounces on the balls of the feet at double speed, wrists spinning fast (1 min).
Rules
- Keep the bounces low and on the balls of the feet; no heel slamming.
- Elbows in: the turn comes from the wrists.
- Stay an arm's length from your neighbors.
- Leaders pick a step everyone can do.
Variations
Easier
Two-foot bounce and alternate foot only, slow tempo.
Standard
All four steps with rotating leaders.
Harder
Link two steps inside the same eight counts without stopping.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: do the wrist action and tap heels or toes to the step from the chair.
- Ankle injury: shift weight through the steps without leaving the ground.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the teacher shows the beat with a raised hand everyone can see.
Learning goals
- Warm up ankles, calves and shoulders before rope work.
- Learn the mechanics of basic jump rope steps.
- Hold a shared beat as a group.
Teacher tip
This saves a lot of time in the main part: when they pick up the rope they already know the steps. Watch for students jumping with arms flung wide and fix it here, without a rope, where it is easier.
