Gear Check-In: Inspect, Clean, and Log
At the end of a session using trip gear, groups rotate through stations to inspect, clean, and log tents, trekking poles, backpacks, and the first-aid kit. It slows things down with a useful task and leaves gear ready for the next trip.

How to play
- Explain the four stations: tents (shake out, count poles and parts, leave open if damp), poles (clean the tips and check the locks), packs (empty and check zippers), and first-aid kit (check against the list and note what's missing) (2 min).
- Inspection in groups at the first station (3 min).
- Rotate to a second station for a quick check (2 min).
- Log what's missing, broken, or needs repair. While each station's spokesperson reads the report, everyone else does standing calf and back stretches (3 min).
Rules
- Damp tents aren't packed closed: leave them open to dry.
- Fold poles with the tips pointing down.
- Nobody takes gear without logging it.
- Broken items get tagged and set aside, not stored with good gear.
Variations
Easier
One station per group with an illustrated checklist.
Standard
Two stations per group with a written log.
Harder
Each group suggests an improvement to the department's storage system.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: first-aid kit station, seated at a table.
- Visually impaired: checks tent parts by touch with a partner reading the list.
- Dust allergies: logging station instead of cleaning.
Learning goals
- Maintain and log shared trip gear.
- Wind down with an organized task.
- Take responsibility for shared resources.
Equipment for a class of 25
- rags: 10
- brushes: 4
- inventory sheets: 4
Teacher tip
Prepare a sheet for each gear type listing the parts it should have; counting goes much faster. The usual mistake is storing tents damp, and they'll be moldy within a week.
