Future Active Self Visualization
Lying down with eyes closed, students imagine a day in their life ten years from now in which physical activity is part of their routine, then write down a small goal to start right away. It blends relaxation, visualization and commitment to an active lifestyle.
How to play
- Each student lies on their back on a yoga mat with a worksheet and a pen next to their head, and closes their eyes.
- Lead 1 minute of slow breathing: in for 4 counts, hold for 2 and out for 6.
- In a calm voice, ask them to picture themselves ten years older: where they live, how they wake up and how they feel getting out of bed (2 minutes).
- Describe an active day: how they get to work or school, what physical activity they do, with whom, where, and how they feel afterward (2 minutes).
- Ask them to lock in one clear image of that future and think of one small habit today that would move them toward it; then they open their eyes slowly and sit up (1 minute).
- In 2 minutes, each student jots down the image and one realistic goal for next week, such as 'walk to school two days.'
- Finish with 1 minute where two or three volunteers share their goal out loud.
Rules
- Stay silent with eyes closed during the visualization.
- Worksheets are private: nobody reads someone else's without permission.
- Goals must be realistic and safe, with no diets or extreme challenges.
Variations
Easier
Picture just the upcoming weekend instead of ten years from now.
Standard
Visualize an active day ten years from now and write one weekly goal.
Harder
Write the goal as a SMART goal with a date and check it again next class.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility picture activities that are accessible and appealing to them, such as adaptive swimming or wheelchair basketball.
- For students with autism, provide a worksheet with guiding questions to answer after the visualization.
- For students who struggle with writing, let them draw the image or tell the teacher their goal quietly.
Learning goals
- Connect physical activity to their own life plans.
- Use visualization as a relaxation and motivation tool.
- Set a realistic personal physical activity goal.

Teacher tip
Hand the worksheets back in two weeks so students can check whether they met their goal. Avoid talk of ideal bodies; focus on how activity feels, health and fun.
