Futsal Sole Skills: Rolls and Pull-Backs
An individual sequence of futsal moves using the sole of the foot: alternating taps, side rolls, pull-backs, and turns. It improves ball control in tight spaces, coordination between both feet, and balance on one leg.
How to play
- Each student gets a futsal ball and stands in a 3 x 3 yard grid square marked with cones (2 minutes to set up).
- Move 1, 2 minutes: alternating sole taps on top of the ball, first in place and then moving forward.
- Move 2, 2 minutes: roll the ball sideways with the sole from one side of the square to the other, switching feet at each side.
- Move 3, 3 minutes: dribble forward, step on the ball, pull it back, and push off in a new direction with the inside of the foot.
- Move 4, 3 minutes: do a sole turn when reaching a cone and dribble back; count clean turns.
- Final challenge, 3 minutes: in pairs, one student creates a three-move combo and the other copies it; switch every minute.
Rules
- Everyone stays inside their own square.
- If the ball gets away, walk to get it without cutting through someone else's space.
- Keep the standing knee bent and the whole foot on the floor so you do not slip on the ball.
- On the whistle, step on the ball and freeze.
Variations
Easier
Do the moves on a stationary ball or while holding on to the wall.
Standard
Practice four sole moves with forward movement and turns inside the square.
Harder
Use the weaker foot and keep eyes up, calling out the numbers the teacher shows on their fingers.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student mimics the moves from the wheelchair with a hand on a ball resting on a low table.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with bells, have a partner describe each move, and mark the square with raised tape.
- Limited balance: allow a foam ball and let the student steady themselves on a pole.
Learning goals
- Control the ball with the sole in a tight space.
- Coordinate both feet while staying balanced.
- Link skill moves together to change direction.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 25
- cones: 36
Teacher tip
A futsal ball bounces less and is ideal for these moves; if you use regular balls, let a little air out. Demonstrate each move slowly and side-on so students can see it.
