Futsal Defending Outnumbered 2-on-3
Two defenders and a goalkeeper face three attackers and must hold them off without conceding for as long as possible. The focus is on defense: closing the middle, talking, delaying instead of diving in and waiting for a teammate's help.
How to play
- Set up two stations, one at each goal. Each has a goalkeeper, two defenders in pinnies and lines of three attackers at the half-court line (3 min).
- Explain the three keys: the two defenders stagger, one pressures the ball carrier without lunging and the other covers the most dangerous pass to the middle.
- Each attack lasts 12 seconds; if the defenders prevent a goal or win the ball, they earn 1 point. If they steal it, they can score on a small goal or across the half-court line for 2.
- Rotate every 4 attacks: the two defenders join the attack and two attackers move to defense. Switch goalkeepers every 8 attacks.
- Play 12 minutes and save the last 2 minutes for each defensive pair to explain what worked.
Rules
- Defenders may not slide tackle or tackle from behind.
- Attackers must make one pass before shooting.
- If an attack goes past 12 seconds without a shot, the point goes to the defense.
- Lines wait off the court, behind the half-court line.
Variations
Easier
Attackers have a two-touch limit each, which gives the defense more time.
Standard
2-on-3 plus goalkeeper with 12 seconds per attack.
Harder
A fourth attacker can join from behind after 6 seconds.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility: play goalkeeper on a smaller goal or act as an attacking passer with no pressure.
- Shy students: keep a steady defensive partner they trust who helps them communicate.
- Lower fitness levels: shorten the attack to 8 seconds to reduce effort.
Learning goals
- Delay without diving in so help can arrive.
- Close the inside pass and steer the attack toward the sideline.
- Talk with a teammate to split up marking duties.
Equipment for a class of 25
- futsal balls: 4
- goals: 2
- cones: 8
- pinnies: 4
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is both defenders going to the ball; stop play and use cones to show the staggered position. Praise defenders who talk, out loud.
