Free Throw Routine and Breathing to Bring Heart Rate Down
Cool-down where each student builds a personal free throw routine (dribbles, breathing, focus) while their heart rate comes down after the main part. It links relaxation with a precision skill and with data tracking.
How to play
- Take your pulse for 15 seconds on reaching the line and write it on the worksheet times four (2 min).
- Explain the routine: same foot placement on the nail, two or three dribbles, slow belly breathing in for 4 seconds and out for 6, eyes on the rim and shoot (2 min).
- In groups of three per basket, each student shoots sets of two free throws with their routine while the others rebound and wait quietly; complete five sets (3 min).
- Take your pulse again, record makes and write a short answer on the worksheet: which part of my routine helps me focus the most (3 min).
Rules
- Everyone stays quiet while someone is shooting.
- The routine lasts 10 seconds at most, just like in the rules.
- Walk, don't run, to get rebounds.
- Each student repeats the same routine in every set.
Variations
Easier
Shoot from one step in front of the free throw line.
Standard
Five sets of two free throws with a personal routine and a pulse check at the start and end.
Harder
Shoot the second free throw of each set with eyes closed after locking eyes on the rim.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: shoots from the chair with the same routine and can move up to a 3-meter line.
- Autism: routine written on a card with numbered steps, and a set basket with the usual group.
- Visual impairment: one classmate gives a sound cue at the rim and another describes where the ball landed.
Learning goals
- Lower heart rate with controlled breathing after exercise.
- Build a stable personal free throw routine.
- Connect a calm state with the precision of a sport skill.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 10
- worksheets: 30
Teacher tip
Collect the worksheets: comparing the pulse readings at the start and end is useful to talk about recovery next lesson. Remember the free throws are not a contest here: what matters is repeating the routine.
