Four-Way Volleyball with Crossed Ropes
A mini volleyball game with two crossed ropes that create four courts, so four teams play at once. Each team decides which court to send the ball to, which forces players to read the game and receive from any direction.
How to play
- Tie two long ropes in a cross 2 m high between basketball hoops or wall bars, making four 4 x 4 m courts marked with cones. Set up two crosses (3 min).
- Make 8 teams of 3 plus a scorekeeper; four teams play on each cross, one per court, and each team starts with 10 lives.
- Serve underhand to any court. The receiving team gets up to three contacts, may catch the first one, and sends with a set or forearm pass to any other court.
- A team loses a life when the ball lands in its court, goes out or takes more than three contacts; that team serves next. At 0 lives nobody is out: record a lost round and reset to 10.
- Play three 5-minute blocks: rotate courts after each, and switch crosses for the third. Wrap-up (2 min): which courts got attacked most and why?
Rules
- Nobody goes under the ropes while the ball is in play.
- A ball that clips the rope and lands in another court is still in play.
- The scorekeeper calls lives out loud, and their call stands.
Variations
Easier
Catch every contact and send the ball over with a two-handed toss.
Standard
Three contacts, the first one may be caught, and a set or forearm pass to any court.
Harder
No catching, and you cannot send the ball back to the court it came from.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: shrink their court to 3 x 3 m with cones and allow catching on every contact.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the scorekeeper shows lives with fingers and starts each block by dropping an arm.
- Mixed ability: stronger teams start with 7 lives and teams that struggle start with 12.
Learning goals
- Choose which court to send to by reading all four teams.
- Receive and send from different directions with sets and forearm passes.
- Respect the rules and the scorekeeper's calls.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long rope: 4
- light balls: 4
- cones: 32
Teacher tip
Check that the ropes are tight and tied to solid anchor points. If everyone targets the weakest team, add a rule that you cannot send to the same court twice in a row.
