Four-Team Capture the Flag
Four teams, each in its own quarter of the field, defend their flag and try to steal everyone else's. With three opponents at once, players must decide whom to attack, when to defend, and how to split roles. Students practice strategy, speed, and fair play.
How to play
- Split a 40 x 40 yd field into four quarters. In each outer corner, place a hoop with a flag and a 2 x 2 yd jail. Four teams of 6 (one of 7) in pinnies (3 min).
- In their own quarter players can tag; in another team's quarter they can be tagged. The 3-yard center circle is a free-passage zone.
- A tagged player goes to that team's jail. A teammate frees them with a hand touch, and both walk back with a hand raised, unable to tag or be tagged.
- Carrying another team's flag to your own hoop scores 1 point; then walk it back. If the carrier is tagged, the flag returns to its hoop.
- Each round lasts 5 minutes: add flag points and subtract half a point for each teammate still in jail.
- Before each round, give 1 minute to assign defenders, jail guards, and attackers. Play 4 rounds.
Rules
- Tag with an open hand on the back, shoulder, or arm; no grabbing or tackling.
- No one may stay within 3 yd of their own flag unless attackers are near.
- Carry only one flag at a time, held visibly.
- Walk in the center circle: it is the busiest crossing.
Variations
Easier
Three teams and no jails: tagged players return to their own quarter.
Standard
Four teams, jails with rescues, and one point per flag brought home.
Harder
One-round alliances are allowed, but the point goes only to the team carrying the flag.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: defend with a pool noodle or use a direct lane into an opponent's quarter.
- Visual impairment: use high-contrast pinnies and flags and a partner who calls out opponents.
- Fitness level: switch attacker and defender roles between rounds.
Learning goals
- Weigh several threats to decide between attacking and defending.
- Divide team roles and carry them out.
- Accept calls on tags and rescues with good sportsmanship.
Equipment for a class of 25
- flags: 4
- hoops: 4
- cones: 24
- colored pinnies: 25
Teacher tip
Often one team gets attacked by everyone while another is ignored; talk about it during the break. Keep flag hoops away from walls and goals.
