Four-Part Body Percussion Piece
Four groups perform the same body percussion piece as a round, each coming in eight counts apart, and then compose a call-and-response section. Students work on rhythmic focus, group coordination, and making music with their bodies.
How to play
- Teach the whole class a 32-count piece made of four 8-count phrases over a slow music track (6 minutes), repeating each phrase before linking it to the next.
- Split the class into 4 groups in the corners of the room. On your signal, group 1 starts; 8 counts later group 2 comes in, and so on (4 minutes).
- Each group plays the piece twice and ends in a pose; the class wins the challenge if all four groups finish without losing the beat.
- Call and response (6 minutes): groups 1 and 2 pair up, as do 3 and 4. One group creates an 8-count call and the other creates a response that completes it.
- Final performance (4 minutes): the full round plus each pair of groups' call-and-response.
- 2-minute reflection: each group shares the moment when it was hardest not to get pulled along by the others.
Rules
- Each group watches its leader, not the other groups, to keep its entrance.
- Body hits are soft and controlled so no one gets hurt.
- If a group gets lost, it waits for the start of the next phrase to come back in.
- Total silence during the rests.
Variations
Easier
A round with only two groups and a 16-count piece.
Standard
A four-group round with entrances every 8 counts and a call-and-response section.
Harder
Entrances every 4 counts and the round changes direction halfway through.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a version of the piece using only hands, thighs, and chest.
- Hearing impairment: the group leader shows the beat with a clearly visible hand.
- Advanced students: act as the conductor cueing each group's entrance.
Learning goals
- Hold your own rhythm part while other groups play something different.
- Coordinate group entrances while keeping a shared beat.
- Compose a rhythm phrase that answers another group's phrase.

Teacher tip
Pick a track around 90 beats per minute. Choose a leader with a strong sense of rhythm in each group and have them face the rest of their group.
