How to play
- Groups of four in a circle about 4 m across; everyone with a racket and one shuttle per group (1 min).
- Free touches to anyone, counting out loud (2 min).
- Fixed order around the circle, alternating forehand and backhand; each group writes down its best streak (3 min).
- After each hit, the hitter taps a cone two steps away and comes back (2 min).
- Add up all the group records for a class record and talk about what helped (2 min).
Rules
- High, soft shots only: no smashing inside the circle.
- Call "mine" before you hit.
- No player hits twice in a row.
Variations
Easier
If the shuttle drops, pick it up and toss it back in without losing the count.
Standard
Fixed order, alternating forehand and backhand.
Harder
6 m circle, and the shuttle must travel over the head of the player across.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: use a balloon or large foam ball that is slower and easier to see.
- Wheelchair users: the group sends chest-high shots and they choose who to pass to.
- Beginners: may touch the shuttle twice in a row (control, then pass).
Learning goals
- Warm up the forehand and backhand stroke.
- Communicate to avoid collisions.
- Contribute to a shared class goal.
Equipment for a class of 25
- badminton rackets: 28
- shuttlecocks: 7
Teacher tip
Make mixed groups and reshuffle halfway. The class record avoids group-versus-group comparisons.
