Four-Corner Passing Drill
A classic basketball warm-up where four lines at the corners of a square pass the ball on the move and follow their pass to the next line. It activates passing, catching on the run, communication, and changes of pace before game play.
How to play
- Mark a 9 x 9 m square with four cones for every 12–13 students (two squares). Put one line at each corner and a ball with line A.
- Pass and follow (2 min): the first player in line A chest passes to the first player in line B, who runs toward the ball to receive; A follows the pass and goes to the back of line B.
- Catch on the run (2 min): B receives while running toward corner C, bounce passes to C, and follows the pass; the ball travels clockwise.
- Switch direction (2 min): on the signal, go counterclockwise and pass with the outside hand.
- Two balls (2 min): two balls start at the same time from opposite corners; say the receiver's name before passing.
- Final challenge (2 min): the group counts passes without the ball touching the floor in 60 seconds, then takes a second try to beat it.
Rules
- Ask for the ball with a target hand and your voice.
- Lead the receiver: pass in front of them, never behind.
- Always follow your pass to the line you passed to.
- If the ball gets away, chase it around the outside of the square, never through the middle.
Variations
Easier
Receive standing still and pass without running, walking to follow the pass.
Standard
Catch on the run with chest or bounce passes depending on the corner.
Harder
Use one-hand passes after a jump stop and pivot, with two balls moving.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: hold a fixed corner as a passer and receive at chest height.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: use an arm signal to switch direction and make eye contact before passing.
- Less experienced players: use a lighter ball and a 6 x 6 m square.
Learning goals
- Activate passing and catching on the move with both hands.
- Coordinate your movement with your teammates' movement.
- Communicate with voice and eye contact to avoid turnovers.
Equipment for a class of 25
- basketballs: 6
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
The classic error is standing still after the pass; keep repeating 'pass and follow.' If lines are too long, add a third square with fewer students per line.
