Foul or Fair Play? The Rules Walk
The group walks in a circle and stops to judge game situations a pair acts out in slow motion. It reviews school hockey safety rules while heart rates come down.
How to play
- The whole group walks in a wide circle around the gym with arm and shoulder mobility (2 min).
- Stop: a volunteer pair acts out a situation in slow motion (stick above the waist, hitting an opponent's stick, playing the ball twice with the foot, playing from the knees, a body push, a clean steal). The group votes: arm up for a foul, thumbs up for fair play (4 min).
- After each vote, a different student explains why it's dangerous or why it's legal (2 min).
- Walk again; each student tells the person next to them one rule they'll pay more attention to in the next game (2 min).
Rules
- The pair always acts in slow motion with no real contact.
- Everyone votes at the same time, on the signal, so nobody copies.
- Listen respectfully to each explanation even if you disagree.
Variations
Easier
The teacher acts out the situations and explains each one.
Standard
Student pairs act out and the group votes.
Harder
Pairs invent borderline situations and the group also decides what call a referee should make.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: a partner quietly describes what is being acted out.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: situations are written on cards and the teacher points to each one.
- Wheelchair users: join the circle and can act out stick-and-ball situations from the chair.
Learning goals
- Identify fouls that put others at risk.
- Explain fair-play decisions.
- Cool down actively.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 2
- floorball balls: 1
Teacher tip
Have the six situations written on a card so you don't have to improvise. It works best right after a game where you saw fouls: use real examples without naming anyone.
