Floorball: Wrist Taps and Grip Changes on the Move
Individual warm-up for hands, wrists and legs with a stick and ball. Students alternate quick blade taps and two different grips to prepare fine ball control before the main activity.
How to play
- Review the grip: top hand at the end of the shaft, bottom hand about a hand and a half lower, knees bent and blade on the floor (1 min).
- Standing still, tap the blade on both sides of the ball with loose wrists: 30 seconds fast and 30 seconds slow, three sets (2 min).
- Walking around the whole area, tap the ball in front of the body; on the whistle, switch to dribbling on the stick side of the feet (2 min).
- Easy jog while dribbling: when the yellow cone is raised use a long grip (hands apart, fine control), and with the red one a short grip (hands together, fast dribbling) (2 min).
- In pairs, one partner claps a rhythm and the other matches the tapping speed without losing the ball; switch roles (2 min).
- Each student rates their ball control from 1 to 5 and picks one point to focus on during the lesson (1 min).
Rules
- The stick never goes above the waist, not even at the start or end of a tap.
- Stay at least 6 feet away from any classmate.
- The ball is played only with the blade, never with the hand.
- On a long whistle, everyone stops with the blade on the floor.
Variations
Easier
Work only standing still and walking, with no grip changes.
Standard
Taps and dribbling with two grips based on the cone signal.
Harder
Add a 360-degree turn while dribbling every time the cone color changes.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair user: shorter stick and a slightly larger ball, tapping beside the wheel.
- Hearing impairment: all cues are given with colored cones and gestures, without relying on the whistle.
- Autism: assign a fixed work square marked with cones and announce changes with a visual countdown.
Learning goals
- Activate forearm, wrist and leg muscles in a sport-specific way.
- Tell the long grip and the short grip apart and know when to use each.
- Self-assess ball control before the main activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 28
- floorball balls: 28
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
In the first minute, check that left- and right-handed students picked the right stick (the blade curves the correct way). Change cone colors without warning to keep them alert.
