Floorball: Dribble to the Called Color with a Low Stick
Reaction warm-up: the whole group dribbles around the area and, when a color is called, must take the ball to a hoop of that color without bumping into anyone and with a low stick. It raises intensity and forces students to look up while dribbling.
How to play
- Place eight hoops in four colors (two of each) around the area and explain the signal: color called, dribble to the hoop and leave the ball inside for one second (1 min).
- Free round: easy dribbling with a color called every 15 seconds (2 min).
- Two colors are called in a row: students must go through both hoops in that order (2 min).
- The teacher calls the color and also raises an arm: if it is the left arm, go to the farthest hoop of that color (2 min).
- Easy jog with no signals and controlled breathing before the main activity (1 min).
Rules
- If the stick goes above the waist, the student restarts dribbling from the center.
- No more than three balls can be in a hoop at once; others wait outside.
- Dribble looking ahead to avoid collisions: never cut in front of someone closer than 3 feet.
- No stealing the ball in this activity.
Variations
Easier
Only one color per signal and dribbling at a walk.
Standard
One or two colors per signal and dribbling at a jog.
Harder
Allow one steal: the last student to reach a hoop gives their ball to the first one who reaches the next, and a spare ball is handed out.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the color is shown with a matching cone held up, as well as being called.
- Overweight or low fitness: may always choose the closest hoop of the called color.
- Color blindness: hoops also have a number on a card, and the number is called too.
Learning goals
- Raise heart rate gradually and in a sport-specific way.
- Dribble with the head up and react to cues.
- Keep the stick below the waist when in a hurry.
Equipment for a class of 25
- floorball sticks: 28
- floorball balls: 28
- hoops: 8
Teacher tip
Place hoops away from walls and pillars to avoid dangerous sudden stops. If there are too many collisions, cut the dribbling group in half and let the rest cheer from the side for 30 seconds.
