Floor Sit-and-Rise: A Slow-Control Finish
A cool-down built on sitting down on the floor and getting back up very slowly with as few supports as possible. It's calm but takes focus, and links the strength trained to an everyday functional task.

How to play
- Briefing: start standing, lower to a cross-legged seat and stand back up; each hand, knee or forearm support counts as a point 'spent' (1 min).
- First free, slow attempt, counting the supports used (2 min).
- Slow-motion attempts: lower and rise over 8 seconds each, trying to save one support compared with the first attempt (3 min).
- Circle reflection: what muscle or mobility were you missing to save supports? Connect it to the session's exercises (2 min).
Rules
- Use any support you need: saving supports never justifies losing balance.
- Slow, continuous movement with no dropping.
- Nobody compares results out loud; each student competes with their first attempt.
- Mats spaced apart so nobody bumps on the way down.
Variations
Easier
Lower and rise at your own pace with whatever supports you need.
Standard
Lower and rise over 8 seconds while saving supports.
Harder
Eyes closed or holding a light object in one hand.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: adapt to sitting and rising from a low chair or bench over 8 seconds.
- Knee injury: lower to sit on a bench instead of the floor.
- Visual impairment: work next to the wall as a reference, without the eyes-closed variation.
Learning goals
- Lower the heart rate with a slow-control task.
- Link trained strength to a functional task.
- Identify your own strength or mobility limitation.

Teacher tip
A good finisher because it needs no extra equipment and takes two minutes to explain. The usual mistake is rushing to 'win'; insist on the 8 seconds.
