Five Images and Their Transitions: A Physical Theater Story
Groups of five tell a story without words in five still group images, focusing on how they move from one to the next. In physical theater the transition matters as much as the image.
How to play
- Each group gets a card with a situation (the last bus home, moving day, the lost final…) and splits it into five moments (5 min).
- They build the five images using different levels and a clear focus in each (10 min).
- They try three transition types: slow motion, a quick one-count cut, and morphing, where one image melts into the next. They pick the best for each step (10 min).
- Share: the first time the audience closes their eyes between images; on the second run they watch the transitions. They discuss what each one adds (10 min).
Rules
- No talking and no mouth sounds.
- In images where people lean on each other, nobody takes another person's full weight.
- On quick cuts, level changes stay controlled.
Variations
Easier
Three images and a single slow-motion transition.
Standard
Five images with three transition types.
Harder
Add an imaginary object passed hand to hand that links every image.
Adaptations
- Blind or low-vision students: the group describes each image quietly in rehearsal and uses hand contact for positions.
- Limited mobility: they hold the focus in several images and the group builds around them.
- Self-conscious students: they can direct from outside during rehearsal and step in for the share.
Learning goals
- Build group images with focus and levels.
- Tell transition types apart and see their effect.
- Tell a story without words.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 6
Teacher tip
Bring the situation cards ready: six are plenty and can repeat. The classic issue is great images with 'get up and walk to my spot' transitions: require that transitions get rehearsed too.
