Fishbowl Peer Observation
A small group repeats a skill from today's lesson in slow motion inside a central 'fishbowl' while the rest of the class watches from outside with a simple checklist. Students practice observing, giving respectful feedback and understanding technique with no physical strain.
How to play
- Mark a 15 x 15 ft square with 4 cones (the fishbowl) and seat the rest of the class around it, about 6 ft back, with one sheet and pen per pair.
- Four volunteers step in and repeat the lesson's main skill in slow motion for 1 minute, such as a chest pass.
- Each pair outside watches just one student in the fishbowl and checks off 2 key points on the sheet: one thing done well and one thing to adjust.
- After the minute, the students inside freeze and each observing pair gives one sentence of feedback, always starting with the positive (2 minutes).
- Rotate: 4 new students go in; repeat the cycle twice more.
- Finish with 1 minute where the class names out loud the most common mistake they saw and how to fix it.
Rules
- Everything in the fishbowl is slow motion, with no hard throws.
- Feedback always starts with something the student did well.
- Comment on the movement, never on the person or their body.
- Anyone who doesn't want to go into the fishbowl can serve as lead observer for one round.
Variations
Easier
Observe just one key point chosen ahead of time by the teacher, such as foot position.
Standard
Observe two key points and give one positive comment and one suggestion.
Harder
The observing pair must also demonstrate the correction they suggest, in slow motion.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can perform an upper-body version of the skill from a chair or act as expert observers.
- For students with autism or shyness, preview the steps with a visual card and let them hand in their feedback in writing.
- Ask more advanced students to watch three key points and connect each error to its cause.
Learning goals
- Identify the key teaching cues of a skill practiced in the lesson.
- Give and receive corrective feedback respectfully.
- Bring heart rate down after the main activity through slow, controlled movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- observation sheets: 13
- pens: 13
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Build the sheet with pictures and only two boxes so it can be filled in within seconds. Pick confident students for the first round so they model the process.
