First-Rung Tag: Safe on the Wall Bars
A gym tag game where the safe zone is hanging on the wall bars with your feet on the lowest rung. It raises the heart rate and practices getting on and off quickly and with control.

How to play
- Explain the safe zone and do shoulder and ankle mobility (2 min).
- Tag with three taggers in pinnies; anyone on the wall bars with feet on the first rung is safe (3 min).
- New taggers; the safe zone only counts with straight arms (2 min).
- Final round: in the safe zone you count "one, two, three" out loud and leave; whoever is tagged takes the pinnie and becomes a tagger (3 min).
Rules
- Feet no higher than the lowest rung: nobody climbs higher.
- Only one student per wall bar section; if it's taken, find another.
- Step down with your feet; never jump off backward.
- Tag by touching the back or shoulder, no pushing.
Variations
Easier
Five seconds in the safe zone and two taggers.
Standard
Three seconds in the safe zone and three taggers.
Harder
The safe zone only counts on a different section from the last one you used.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: plays as a permanent tagger with a short stick to tag, or their wheelchair is also a safe zone for others.
- Deaf students: start and stop signals with a raised scarf.
- Hand injury: their safe zone is touching the wall bars with their back instead of hanging.
Learning goals
- Raise the heart rate before climbing.
- Get on and off the first rung with control.
- Play by the safe-zone rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wall bars: 6
- pinnies: 4
Teacher tip
With few wall bar sections, add two hoops on the floor as extra safe zones. Common mistake: jumping off backward to run; stop the game and have them step down foot by foot.
