First-Period Wake-Up: The Alertness Scale
A warm-up for first-period classes. Students rate how awake they feel before and after a progressive warm-up and link their energy to sleep.

How to play
- Five numbered cones in a line. Each student stands by the number that shows how awake they feel: 1 half asleep, 5 fully charged. No need to explain why (1 min).
- Progressive warm-up: walking, easy jog, jog with changes of direction, and low hops (4 min).
- Partner reaction: the teacher calls a cone color or number and pairs race to touch it; first one there wins (3 min).
- Dynamic mobility on the move: ankles, hips, shoulders, and lunges with a twist (2 min).
- Back to the cone line. See how many moved up. The teacher notes that movement wakes you up, but teens are advised to sleep 8 to 10 hours (2 min).
Rules
- Ratings are personal: nobody comments on someone else's number.
- In the reaction game, touch the cone with your hand; no diving.
- Each phase raises intensity a little; nobody sprints cold.
- Keep to your lane to avoid collisions.
Variations
Easier
A longer warm-up without the partner reaction.
Standard
The full sequence as described.
Harder
Reaction with a double call («cone 3, then back to 1») and mobility done balancing on one foot.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: replace cones with positions along a textured wall, or a partner calls out as a guide.
- Students who arrive sleepy or unwell: may do the warm-up at walking pace and let the teacher know.
- Lower-limb injury: does trunk and arm mobility and becomes the one who calls the colors.
Learning goals
- Warm up the body progressively first thing in the morning.
- Notice how alertness changes with exercise.
- Connect nighttime rest with performance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 12
Teacher tip
Do not ask how many hours they slept: the alertness number is enough. If many students sit at 1 or 2 most days, it is worth raising with their homeroom or advisory teacher.
