First Aid Myth or Fact: Walk and Debate
Pairs walk and quietly debate popular beliefs about first aid, then decide whether each is a myth or a fact by walking to one side of the court or the other. It lowers intensity while busting mistakes that can make an injury worse.
How to play
- Walk in pairs at an easy pace; one side of the court is 'myth' and the other 'fact', marked with cones (1 min).
- The teacher reads a statement and pairs debate it for 30 seconds while walking (2 min).
- Pairs walk to their chosen side and the teacher explains the right answer in one sentence (3 min).
- Last statement comes from students: each pair suggests one and the rest vote by walking (2 min).
Rules
- Always walk, never run, to your side.
- Partners decide together; if they can't agree, they stay in the middle.
- Listen to the explanation before the next statement.
- No making fun of anyone's answer.
Variations
Easier
Four very clear statements with a visual hint.
Standard
Six varied statements.
Harder
Pairs must explain why and what to do instead.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: statements are shown on large written cards.
- Limited mobility: bring the two sides closer, or vote from the wheelchair with two colored cards.
- Students anxious about emergencies: act as the statement reader.
Learning goals
- Recognize false beliefs about first aid.
- Know the correct response in common situations.
- Cool down with a discussion-based task.
Equipment for a class of 25
- statement cards: 8
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Useful statements: tilt your head back for a nosebleed (myth: lean forward and pinch); butter on a burn (myth: cool running water); put something in the mouth during a seizure (myth); heat on a fresh sprain (myth: cold); calling 911 is free (fact); anyone can use an AED (fact: the device talks you through it).
