Finnish Skittles with Numbered Bottles
A school version of the Finnish throwing game: students knock down bottles numbered 1 to 12 by tossing another bottle underhand, trying to reach exactly 50 points. It builds accuracy, mental math, and choosing the best shot.
How to play
- Build it (5 min): each group puts a finger of sand into 12 half-liter bottles and writes a big number from 1 to 12 on each; a 1.5-liter bottle a quarter full of sand is the throwing pin.
- Setup: stand the 12 bottles in a tight cluster with 1 and 2 in front, and a throwing line 10–12 feet away. Groups of 5 or 6 split into two teams.
- Alternating turns (15 min): toss the throwing pin underhand. If one bottle falls, score its number; if several fall, score how many fell.
- Fallen bottles are stood back up right where they landed, so the cluster spreads out and the shots change.
- The first team to hit exactly 50 wins; going over drops the score to 25. A player who misses three turns in a row costs the team 5 points.
- Rotation (5 min): winning teams switch groups to play new opponents.
Rules
- Always throw underhand and from behind the line.
- Teammates take turns throwing, with no repeats.
- Teams call out which bottle they're aiming for before throwing.
- Safety: no one walks out to reset until the last throw has stopped.
Variations
Easier
Throw from 6 feet, play to 30, and drop the going-over rule.
Standard
Play to exactly 50 and drop back to 25 when going over.
Harder
Throw from 15 feet and announce the exact number you're trying to score.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: throws from a wheelchair or rolls the pin with both hands.
- Visual impairment: use brightly colored bottles and have a partner describe the cluster.
- Skill level: a student who struggles with math keeps score with tally marks or a helper.
Learning goals
- Throw underhand accurately at a specific target.
- Choose the best shot by figuring out the points still needed.
- Learn a traditional game from another culture.
Equipment for a class of 25
- recycled bottles: 65
- sand
- markers: 5
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
Write the numbers in permanent marker on two sides so they can be read from the line. A little sand is enough: heavy bottles won't fall.
