Feet-to-Feet Ball Pass
Sitting in a circle and then in a line, group members pass a ball using only their feet, and the line travels across the space as the ball reaches the end. Students work on body control, core strength and cooperation.
How to play
- Make three groups of eight or nine sitting in a circle, hands on the floor behind them and legs together (1 min).
- Circle pass: grip the foam ball between both feet and pass it to the feet of the classmate on your right. Count full laps in 1 minute, three tries (4 min).
- Traveling line: the group sits in a line, one behind the other. The ball passes from feet to feet back over the head of the student behind; whoever passes it runs and sits at the front of the line (5 min).
- The line moves this way to a cone 10 yards away. On arrival, each group adds its trips to the class score.
- Final challenge: two balls at once in the circle, going opposite directions, without both landing on the same feet (2 min).
Rules
- The ball is only touched with feet; if it drops, pick it up with your feet where it fell.
- Pass gently, without kicking the ball.
- All groups add to the same class score.
- Safety: in the line, keep an arm's length apart so feet don't hit anyone's face.
Variations
Easier
Use a large, light ball and allow heels to rest on the floor.
Standard
A medium foam ball in a circle and a traveling line.
Harder
Pass a tennis ball, or two balls at once.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: if the student can't use their legs, they receive and pass with hands while the group keeps using feet.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell and say 'Coming!' before each pass.
- Fitness level: a student whose abs get tired can lean on elbows instead of hands.
Learning goals
- Control a ball with the feet while seated.
- Work core muscles in a playful way.
- Coordinate passes with classmates without rushing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- foam balls: 6
- cones: 3
Teacher tip
The most common mistake is lifting legs apart so the ball slips through, so insist on feet together. In the line, remind kids the ball goes over a classmate, not toward their face.
