Feather Grip: Loosen Your Forearms With a Gentle Pinch Game
A calm partner game where you hold a scarf with as little force as possible while your partner pulls very slowly. It helps release tension in the hands and forearms after climbing.
How to play
- In pairs, seated face to face: one pinches the scarf between thumb and one finger; the other pulls very slowly (1 min).
- Challenge: hold with just enough force so the scarf slides slowly with no jerks, switching fingers each time (2 min).
- Switch roles and hands (2 min).
- Finish: open and close your hands slowly ten times and tell your partner which hand felt more tired (1 min).
Rules
- Always pull slowly, never suddenly.
- Stay seated and quiet or talk softly.
- If a hand hurts, switch to the other one.
Variations
Easier
Gentle whole-hand pinch.
Standard
Thumb-and-one-finger pinch, switching fingers.
Harder
Eyes closed, feeling when it starts to slide.
Adaptations
- Students with low vision: works the same by touch; the partner says when they start pulling.
- Limited hand mobility: holds the scarf between palm and thigh and controls the pressure.
- Hand injury: plays with the healthy hand only.
Learning goals
- Control grip force.
- Relax the hands and forearms after effort.
- Notice built-up tension.
Equipment for a class of 25
- scarves: 15
Teacher tip
Hand out the scarves while students are still at the wall bars to save time. Common mistake: pulling hard to win; remind them the winner is the slowest slide.
