Faceless Dance Film: Hands, Feet and Shadows on a Phone
Groups make a one-minute dance film where no face ever appears: only hands, feet, silhouettes and shadows. Privacy becomes a creative tool, and students learn to film and share without exposing anyone.
How to play
- Privacy rules: no faces, no filming anyone who hasn't agreed, phones in airplane mode while filming, and nothing goes on social media (4 min).
- Framing tests: hand shots, feet at floor level and shadows on a wall or sheet with a flashlight (8 min).
- Three-part plan (start, middle, end) around a simple idea: a meeting, a chase, a transformation (6 min).
- Film the shots, groups taking turns (12 min).
- Screen each group's film on their phone in a rotation; discuss which shot best conveys the idea (6 min).
- Submit or delete: groups hand in the video through the school platform and delete copies from personal phones (4 min).
Rules
- No recognizable faces in the video.
- Only film people who give permission right then.
- Videos go through the school's channel and are not shared elsewhere.
- Never point flashlights at anyone's eyes.
Variations
Easier
One minute in a single hand shot.
Standard
One minute with at least three kinds of shots and no faces.
Harder
Edit in a video app with cuts on the beat of royalty-free music.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: director of photography or the hands on screen, no changes needed.
- Students without a phone or who'd rather not use theirs: team up with someone using a school device, or run the lighting.
- Students with visual impairments: star in the shadow dance and provide the music or rhythm.
Learning goals
- Compose a dance film with its own visual language.
- Apply privacy rules when filming and sharing.
- Explore the expressive potential of different body parts.
Equipment for a class of 25
- phones: 6
- flashlights: 6
- white sheets: 2
Teacher tip
Get phone-use permission ahead of time and keep a few school devices in reserve. Common mistake: mixing horizontal and vertical shots, so have groups pick one before they start.
