Eyes-Closed Calm Balance
A series of simple static balances on the mat, first with eyes open and then closed, paired with slow breathing. It builds ankle and knee proprioception to help prevent sprains, along with focus.
How to play
- Each student stands barefoot or in grip socks on a yoga mat with a partner beside them about an arm's length away (1 min).
- Tandem stance: one foot directly in front of the other, 30 seconds eyes open and 30 eyes closed, then switch the front foot (2 min).
- Single-leg stance: stand on one leg with the other knee raised to hip height, 20 seconds eyes open and 20 closed per leg (1.5 min).
- Tree pose with hands at the chest, eyes closed, and slow breathing, 20 seconds per leg (1 min).
- Finish standing on both feet, noticing how weight spreads across the soles for three breaths (1.5 min).
Rules
- If you lose balance, open your eyes and set the foot down without hopping.
- Work in pairs: while one practices, the other watches in case support is needed.
- Leave enough space so no one falls into a classmate.
- Go barefoot only if the floor is clean and hazard-free.
Variations
Easier
Do every balance with eyes open and one finger touching the wall.
Standard
The full series alternating eyes open and closed.
Harder
Balance on a folded mat to make the surface less stable.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated trunk balance without a backrest, eyes open and closed.
- Visual impairment: practice next to a wall while the partner calls out time cues.
- Recent ankle injury: tandem stance with eyes open only, or switch to seated breathing.
Learning goals
- Improve ankle and knee proprioception.
- Maintain balance with and without visual input.
- Combine focus and breathing to stabilize the body.
Equipment for a class of 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Have students fix their gaze on a spot before closing their eyes; it helps a lot at first. Remind them this is great sprain prevention for any sport.
