Eyes-Closed Balance Challenge
In pairs, one student holds static balance poses first with eyes open and then closed, while the partner keeps time and spots them. It builds body control, focus and slow, steady breathing.
How to play
- Make pairs spaced at least 6 feet from other pairs: one partner balances and the other stands beside them as the spotter (1 min).
- Pose 1: stand on one foot, other sole against the ankle, hands on hips; 20 seconds eyes open, then 20 seconds eyes closed (1 min).
- Switch legs and switch roles; the partner quietly counts how long the balancer holds without touching down (1.5 min).
- Pose 2: tree pose, foot on the calf and arms overhead; same eyes-open, eyes-closed sequence, switching roles (2 min).
- Pairs discuss what changes when eyes close and what helps: focusing on a spot, slow breathing, bracing the core (1 min).
- Finish: everyone together, eyes closed, five slow breaths in the pose they choose (0.5 min).
Rules
- The spotter stays one step away with hands ready, touching only if needed.
- If you lose your balance, put your foot down and start again calmly.
- Work quietly; talk only to count time.
- Never press your foot against the knee of the standing leg.
Variations
Easier
Keep the toes of the free foot touching the floor and close eyes for only 10 seconds.
Standard
Balance on one foot for 20 seconds eyes open and 20 seconds eyes closed.
Harder
Balance on a folded mat or turn the head slowly left and right.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated trunk balance, lifting arms and one leg if possible, with eyes closed.
- Students with visual impairments: start with one hand on the partner's shoulder and gradually let go.
- Students with less stability: stand next to a wall so they can touch it with one hand.
Learning goals
- Hold static balance with and without visual input.
- Use breathing and attention to steady the body.
- Keep a partner safe while they work.
Teacher tip
Space pairs well so nobody bumps into others if they lose balance. It's a great moment to explain how vision supports balance and link it to ankle sprain prevention.
