Eye Relaxation for Screen and Study Strain
A short routine to rest the eyes: cup the palms over them, shift focus far and near, trace imaginary shapes, and blink on purpose. It builds eye-health habits and relaxation for students who spend hours on screens and notes.
How to play
- Seated, rub the hands together for 10 seconds and cup the palms over closed eyes without pressing, breathing slowly (1 min).
- 20-20-20 rule: look at a point more than 20 feet away (a tree, the basketball hoop) for 20 seconds, then at a fingertip 8 inches away; alternate 5 times (1.5 min).
- Keeping the head still, trace a big sideways figure eight with the eyes, 5 times each way (1 min).
- Blink quickly and gently 20 times, then close the eyes for 20 seconds and notice them moisten (1 min).
- Cup the eyes again and discuss with a partner how many hours of screen time you have per day (1.5 min).
Rules
- Never press on the eyeballs.
- Contact lens wearers keep the movements gentler and can skip the fast blinking.
- Keep the head still: only the eyes move.
Variations
Easier
Do only the palming and the 20-20-20 rule.
Standard
Do the full four-exercise routine.
Harder
In pairs, design a 2-minute eye break to use every hour of studying and try it in class.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it the same way seated, elbows resting on a desk.
- Visual impairment: focus on palming, blinking, and facial relaxation, adapting the rest with input from family or the eye doctor.
- Autism: announce each exercise and allow eyes open during palming.
Learning goals
- Learn eye-health habits for studying and screen use.
- Relax the eye and face muscles after exertion.
- Build short movement breaks into the daily routine.
Teacher tip
If you're outside, pick a far-off landmark everyone can see. It's a great opening to talk about study breaks and phone use before bed.
