Everyday-Life Stations: Each Station Is a Real-World Task
A six-station circuit where each functional exercise is tied to a real task: carrying groceries, lifting a box, putting a suitcase overhead. It shows students why each pattern matters outside the gym.

How to play
- Walk through the six stations and their real task: goblet squat with a jug (getting up off the floor), jug deadlift (picking up a box), overhead press with jugs (lifting a suitcase), band row (opening a heavy door), jug carry (carrying groceries) and band anti-rotation (resisting a sideways pull) (4 min).
- Rotate through all six stations in groups of 5: 3 min per station, two 40 s sets and the rest for coaching and switching (18 min).
- Sort it out: each group gets cards with everyday tasks (pushing a cart, picking up a toddler, carrying a backpack on one shoulder...) and matches each to the closest pattern, with a reason (5 min).
- Share: which pattern do we use all the time but almost never train? (3 min).
Rules
- Pick up and set down jugs with a hinge or squat, never a rounded back.
- Everyone chooses their jug (about 1 or 2 gallons) and can switch between sets.
- On the overhead press, anyone with a pinching shoulder switches to an incline press against the wall.
- Each station's space is marked with cones; don't drift into the next one.
Variations
Easier
Smaller or half-full jugs and 30 s sets.
Standard
1-2 gallon jugs and two 40 s sets per station.
Harder
Heavier jugs, and the group acts out the real-world task card at the end of each station.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: press, row and anti-rotation done seated; the carry is done with the jug on the lap while pushing.
- Low-back injury: drop the deadlift and loaded carry and replace them with glute bridges and planks.
- Intellectual disability: each station has a picture card of the real task and the exercise.
Learning goals
- Connect movement patterns to everyday tasks.
- Perform exercises with homemade loads using safe technique.
- Identify which patterns are missing from your own training.
Equipment for a class of 25
- water jugs: 12
- resistance bands: 10
- mats: 6
- cones: 24
- task cards: 30
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
Ask students to bring empty jugs a week ahead and fill them at school; mark the volume with a marker. Check that the caps seal tightly before use.
