Escape the Trap: Beating a Corner Double-Team
A ball handler in the corner gets trapped by two defenders and must dribble out or pass to a teammate getting open. It works the retreat dribble, ball protection and off-ball support.
How to play
- Retreat dribble: two dribbles backward to open an angle and escape on the open side (4 min).
- Ball handler in the corner, two defenders trap passively, and the support player moves to an open passing lane (5 min).
- Live trap: the ball handler has five seconds to dribble out or pass; if they escape, they and their partner attack the hoop 2v1 against the nearest defender (7 min).
- Rotate roles and discuss: which escape worked best? (4 min).
Rules
- Defenders trap with arms high, no hugging or slapping arms.
- The ball handler may pivot after picking up the dribble.
- If the ball goes out or is stolen, roles switch.
- Groups of four at similar levels.
Variations
Easier
Passive trap and ten seconds to escape.
Standard
Live trap with five seconds.
Harder
The support player also has a defender denying the pass.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: act as the support player or as ball handler with defenders who can't steal off the dribble.
- Students with visual impairments: play support, call the ball handler by voice and use a sound ball.
- Students who feel unsure: always start with a passive trap and choose when to go live.
Learning goals
- Beat a trap with a retreat dribble or a pass.
- Give a teammate under pressure a passing lane.
- Stay calm under defensive pressure.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Use all four corners of each half court to run many groups at once. The usual mistake is dribbling toward the baseline, so stress that the way out is backward or toward the middle.
